PCA FAQs

  • What does PCA mean?
    • The original PCA goats were the result of several members of the Pygora Breeders Association (PBA) crossing their Pygora goats to Colored Angora Goats. Since PBA does not recognize these crosses in their PBA registry, the PCA Goat Registry was formed. It was decided to also include Pygmy goats crossed with Colored Angora Goats into the registry, since the PBA gene pool includes Pygmy. Historically, the "P" stands for the "Pygora" and the "Pygmy" in our goats; the "C" stands for "Color" and the "Cashmere" quality of our fleeces; the "A" stands for the "Angora" in our goats. The term "PCA" is now well known in the goat and fiber world and stands alone in defining our goats.

  • What constitutes a PCA goat?
    • A PCA goat is a hybrid goat. To obtain a healthy gene pool, out-crossing is necessary at this time. Later, if PCA decides to close the Registry, the breed will be considered true; the Registry will only be for offspring of registered PCA goats; and out-crossing will not be allowed. Currently, the following crosses are acceptable, if all of the animals are officially registered in their appropriate Registries:
      • PCA x PCA
      • PCA x CAGBA
      • PCA x PBA
      • PCA x AAGBA
      • PCA x NPGA
      • PBA x CAGBA
      • NPGA x CAGBA

    • What do all those acronyms mean?
      • PCA = PCA Goat Registry (this registry)
      • PBA = Pygora Breeders Association
      • AAGBA = American Angora Goat Breeders Association
      • CAGBA = Colored Angora Goat Breeders Association
      • NPGA = National Pygmy Goat Association

  • How do I become a PCA member and register my farm name?
    • Fill out the "PCA Application for Farm Name & Tattoo" and mail it to the registrar.

  • Can I be a PCA member if I don't own PCA goats?
    • Yes. Fill out the "PCA Application"for Farm Name & Tattoo, leave the farm name and Tattoo ID sections blank, and mail to the registrar.

  • What are the PCA Membership and Registration fees?
    • By keeping PCA mostly Internet assessable, our costs are minimal, and initially we will not have any membership or registration fees. As our organization matures, we will have to revisit this issue.

  • Can I use a colored angora goat from the Colored Angora Goat Record (CAGR) to make a PCA goat?

  • Is PCA a part of the USDA Scrapies Eradication Program?
    • Yes it is. If your goat's individual identification is registered with PCA it meets all the requirements for this program. It is your repsonsibility to tattoo, tag or microchip your goats in a manner that is readable at all times. If not, you need to replace your tags or chips or re-tattoo your goat. If you have a registered farm with the USDA Scrapies Program, you may use their tags to identify your goats with PCA. For more information, check out the USDA website on Scrapies.

  • Help! I am confused about the terminology defining fiber from PCA goats. Check out this PCA site for more information: PCA Fiber Descriptions & Terminology.
